Minnesota irrigators can submit policy, funding and program ideas online or participate in one of two virtual public input sessions.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is seeking ideas from farmers, agricultural businesses and others who are affected by the state’s food and agriculture systems as it prepares for the 2027 legislative session.
This is an opportunity for Minnesota irrigators to share their perspectives on policies, funding priorities and programs that affect agricultural production. Input from producers can help ensure that issues involving irrigation, water management, conservation, research, technology and agricultural infrastructure are considered as the MDA develops its legislative proposals and next biennial budget.
How to provide input
The MDA is offering three ways to participate.
Submit ideas online
The MDA’s online input portal is open from August 10 through September 18, 2026. Participants can submit a proposal, provide background information and explain why the idea should be considered.
The MDA notes that information submitted through the portal is considered public data under Minnesota law.
Attend a virtual input session
The MDA will also hold two free virtual public input sessions on Zoom. Registration is required.

Why this input matters
The Minnesota Legislature will determine the state’s next two-year budget during the legislative session beginning January 12, 2027. That budget includes funding for the MDA and other agricultural activities throughout the state.
The Irrigators Association of Minnesota encourages irrigators to use this opportunity to communicate the needs, challenges and opportunities facing irrigated agriculture. While the MDA cannot guarantee that every submission will be included in its final proposals, all ideas will be reviewed and considered.
