Minnesota Celebrates One Million Acres Certified for Water Quality

Farmers Champion Land and Water Stewardship Milestone

In a resounding victory for conservation efforts, Minnesota’s Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP) has achieved a monumental milestone: over one million acres of farmland enrolled in the program. Governor Tim Walz made this significant announcement at Eric Heins’ farm in Altura, emphasizing the program’s crucial role in safeguarding the state’s natural resources.

“Our Ag Water Quality Certification Program ensures our lakes, rivers, and drinking water are protected for future generations,” stated Governor Walz. “Farmers understand this. They are stewards of our natural resources, and they’re stepping up to make meaningful changes to their operations to protect our land and water.”

This achievement highlights the commitment of Minnesota farmers and landowners to environmental stewardship. Eric Heins, among the 1,400 certified farmers since the program’s inception in 2014, stands as a testament to this collective dedication.

Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen commended the milestone, acknowledging the role of the program in empowering farmers to showcase their conservation efforts, access funding assistance, and ensure compliance with evolving regulations.

“We’re excited to hit this million-acre milestone and recognize all the farmers and landowners that have stepped up to become part of the Ag Water Quality Certification Program,” said Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “This is a unique program that allows farmers to highlight their conservation work, get access to funding assistance, and ensure they are compliant with the latest regulations. I encourage farmers and landowners to look into the advantages of certifying their land.”

Among the array of New Conservation Practices adopted by MQWQCP certified producers, several stand out as the most prevalent techniques. Cover crops, nutrient management, grassed waterways, irrigation water management, prescribed grazing, and water and sediment control basins emerge as the primary strategies embraced by these dedicated stewards of the land. These practices serve as pillars in fortifying environmental sustainability, mitigating soil erosion, optimizing water usage, and fostering healthier agricultural ecosystems. The commitment to implementing these practices underscores the proactive approach of certified producers in safeguarding Minnesota’s natural resources and ensuring a thriving agricultural landscape for generations to come.

The impact of Water Quality Certified farms is profound, with over 2,760 new conservation practices implemented to protect Minnesota’s precious waters. Annually, these practices yield substantial benefits:

  • Preventing 47,000 tons of sediment from entering Minnesota rivers
  • Conserving 141,000 tons of soil and 59,000 pounds of phosphorus on farms
  • Reducing nitrogen loss by up to 49%
  • Slashing greenhouse gas emissions by over 50,000 tons

This significant achievement reflects the unwavering dedication of Minnesota’s agricultural community towards sustainable practices and environmental preservation, ensuring a healthier future for the state’s vital waterways and ecosystems.
